INTRODUCTION
With its establishment in July of 1988, China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME) is a legitimate mass organization composed of the corporations and enterprises specially engaging in foreign trade of machinery and electronic products in China and now has more than 2600 members.

OBJECTIVE OF CCCME
On the basis of self-management within the organization, CCCME exerts to establish normal foreign trade order, to promote foreign trade and to protect common interests of the members.

To work as a bridge and a link between the governmental organs and its members, timely reflect reasonable demands of the members to the relevant governmental departments. On behalf of its members, CCCME will actively put forward suggestions of how to expand, promote and develop the foreign trade of machinery and electronic products on the basis of obeying the general and specific policies of the State.
To guard against unfair practice of import and export business, to keep foreign trade in good order, to consult with its members in order to reach in-trade-agreements for specific products, and to further enhance the self-management among its members.

To mediate business disputes between the members, assist them to solve disputes with other parties and protect the just rights and interests of the members.

To organize professional fairs or exhibitions domestically and internationally for its members and to make joint efforts explore international market for machinery and electronic products.

To help the members to mediate with the foreign commercial organizations or companies on major trade disputes and to defend their legitimate rights and interests.

To attend the international or professional meetings on behalf of its members, to help the members build up contacts with international organization of the same trade and to exchange information and engage in cooperation for them.

To organize its members to do market survey and research both at home and abroad in order to keep abreast of business and market information, to issue publications and to supply its members with useful information and to offer consultative services.

To undertake the other business related to the import and export of machinery and electronic products entrusted by the governmental organs.

The Founding of CCCME
China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME) was established in Beijing on July 21, 1988 with the support and concern of the leadership of the State Council, MFERT and the office for Export of Machinery and Electronic Products under the State Council, and with the energetic support from and in coordination with ministries, commissions and departments concerned.
CCCME had 513 members when it was set up.

Leadership's Concern, Members' Support
In its ten years' growth, CCCME has enjoyed kind concern and support from the leadership of the State Council, who gave nearly 20 man-time of speeches, instructions, and inscriptions. Leaders of ministries, commissions and other departments concerned have attended activities organized by CCCME totaling 30 man-times.

CCCME has grown from a membership of 513 ten years ago when it was set up to 2600 as of the end of December 1999. Of the member enterprises, 155 are council members, 60 are standing council members, and 9 are enterprises whose one of executives is a vice chairman of the CCCME.

Activities of Branches
In accordance with business requirements, CCCME set up 14 professional branches. They have since been actively carrying out various activities, making close contacts with member enterprises, and thus contributing positively to the promotion of foreign trade of machinery and electronic products.

Making In-trade Agreements Through Consultation and Strengthening Coordination
Coordination is the focal point of the work of CCCME. Over the last decade, with the support from related governmental departments and its members, this Chamber of Commerce has done a lot of coordinating work in exports of complete sets of equipment and large units, tenders for foreign projects, and in-trade agreements. China Export Commodities Fairs and regional export commodities fairs, export quota bidding, export commodities price verification, responding to overseas antidumping charges, etc.

Information and Consulting Service
To provide members with information and consulting service is one of basic functions of the Chamber. In the past decade, we have carried out information and consulting service in different forms: publishing diverse publications, organizing various forms of market information exchange meetings, holding briefings, reports, lectures and seminars on different topics, and conducting training courses on special subjects at home and abroad, which are well received by members.
With the rapid development of information technology, this Chamber has exerted itself to apply the advanced information technology in the service to members. Since 1996, the Chamber has edited and published series CD-ROMs entitled "China's Machinery and Electronic Products Marching to the World Market" with the title inscription written by Minister Shi Guangsheng; edited and published "Statistical Analysis of China's Export of Machinery and Electronic Products " on micro floppy disks; established CCCME's web site on the Internet, and opened up information service columns on CCCME's homepage; has been making full use of E-mail for information and consulting service; and implementing computer local area network for resources sharing so as to raise the information and consulting capability as a whole.
Encouraged by the international information technology development, CCCME came up with the proposal concerning setting up "China Machinery and Electronics Online Fair" which has received extensive support from member enterprises.

Market information exchange
In order to implement "Market Diversification Strategy", CCCME often organizes meetings for exchanging information about various regional markets of the world. Leaders, experts of departments concerned, Chinese commercial officials in foreign countries and foreign commercial officials in China are invited to give presentations at the meetings.

Publishing Electronic Publications
With a view to publicizing member enterprises and China's export performance of machinery and electronic products, CCCME has edited and published in succession a series of CD-ROMs entitled "China's Machinery and Electronic Products Marching to the World Market". The 1st title gives information on China's import and export of machinery and electronic products in recent ten years, and the enterprises engaging in the import and export of these products. The 2nd title carries the laws and regulations of China that govern the import and export of machinery and electronic products. And the third title gives a presentation of machinery and electronic enterprises that have obtained ISO 9000 series quality system certification. Meantime, to meet members' requirements, this Chamber has edited and published Statistical Analysis of China's Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic on floppy disks.

Publications
Over the past decade, CCCME and its branches have published, or co-published with other units, 20 plus publications. These publication, as a vehicle for reporting important information and opinions to the government departments and for providing policy and trade information and consulting services to member enterprises, have been contributing to the promotion of foreign trade of machinery and electronics.

Professional Training
To provide member enterprises with training services is one of the tasks of CCCME. Over the last decade, the Chamber has organized a total of 84 seminars, training courses, and lectures on professional topics. Attendants from member enterprises totaled 7490 man-time. These training services have offered conditions for member enterprises to get acquainted with international markets and enrich their knowledge of foreign trade.

Training Abroad
In order to train high-level foreign trade personnel, CCCME has organized abroad three training programs on foreign trade management, laws and finance for member enterprises since 1995, with over 60 trainees, who enlarged their views and enriched their knowledge of foreign trade through the training.

Online Information Service
CCCME provides its member enterprises with regular online information service, mainly including "Trade Matchmaker", "Surplus Material to Supply", "Introduction to Member Enterprises", etc.
